NIST's contest for a new secure hash
Posted by cryptodecker on Friday, February 09, 2007 (02:56:56) (439 reads)
NIST Hash Contest
NIST has announced the contest to find a replacement for SHA-1, with the goal date in 2011 for the final product.
With the current attacks on SHA-1, NIST has decided that it is time for a replacement to be fished out of the internet ether.
Now, in case you are unaware what the big deal with hash functions is, here is a quote from Schneier's Blog.
| Quote:: |
| One-way hash functions are supposed to have two properties. First, they're one-way. This means that it is easy to take an input and compute the hash value, but it's impossible to take a hash value and recreate the original input. By "impossible" I mean "can't be done in any reasonable amount of time." |
All I have to say is, good luck to all, and it is about time.

Complexity of Linux Apache vs. M$ IIS

Linux vs. Microsoft
As to keep you from having to read the whole article, though it is kinda interesting. What the pictures show is a mapping of system calls when the afformentioned web servers host up a single web page with a single picture on it.
It is to illustrate how insecure an IIS box is compared to an Apache box is due to the complexity of the system.
Quite Interesting stuff.

I dont know how long it will take for other sites to post this, but after watching the NASA Press release, they announced today at 1300 EST that they believe they have found water on the surface of Mars.
You might be able to find the press release video through NasaTV.
Look for MEDIA ADVISORY: M06-186.

FBI uses remote cell phone mic as a bug

FBI Cell Phone Taps
Now I have heard about this awhile ago, but couldn't find much technical details about it, just rumors and standing policies. But now we have smart phones, and alot of things have changed since then, so I am more inclined to believe it is possible these days.

Full Body Teleportation
Posted by cryptodecker on Saturday, May 13, 2006 (23:38:02) (276 reads)
Teleportation
So a patent was issued on Apr. 6, 2006 for full body teleportation system. Is this what everybody has been waiting for? Will we finally be able to make day trips to Europe?
Hardly.
The patent is based on the fact that, to recieve a patent you just have to prove the valadity of the abstract, not have a working product, or can even build a working product. I am unsure if this prank is to show the flaws in our patent system, or if he is just betting on making some money before 15 (?) years if someone does invent a teleportation system.
Either way, if you still believe the above, I got some land in PB to sell ya.
